Grappa Trivia
Is grappa a wine or liquor?
Grappa is an alcoholic grape pomace (or “vinaccia”) drink specific to Northern Italy made from discarded grape stems, seeds, and skins.
How do you drink grappa?
Grappa should be served neither too cold nor too warm. The ideal serving temperature is between 48 and 55 degrees for young and aromatic grappa and 60 and 64 degrees for aged grappa. When in doubt, it's best to serve it at a lower temperature.
What does grappa taste like?
Quality grappa is a very different animal, with diverse tones of berry sweetness and a variety of soft and subtle overtures, from honey to caramel and treacle.
How is grappa being made?
Grappa is an alcoholic beverage: a fragrant, grape-based pomace brandy of Italian origin that contains 35 to 60 percent alcohol by volume (70 to 120 US proof).
Grappa is made by distilling the skins, pulp, seeds, and stems (i.e., the pomace) left over from winemaking after pressing the grapes. It was originally made to prevent waste by using these leftovers. A similar drink, known as acquavite d'uva, is made by distilling whole must.
About Regadin by Zanin
Everything starts in Zugliano, in a small village in the Veneto foothills with a vocation for mainly sheep farming located in the province of Vicenza. A story of a man that went from innkeeper to distiller until 1895, the year that saw the Grappa Cavallina Bianca moving out from the basement in all its acclaimed glory. The name can be translated by "White Horse", named after his best ride. The founder, Bortolo Zanin, was seeking a different name than “Spirito Bianco” White Spirit - which he was serving his guests at the tavern. From a necessity to a virtue: is the idea behind the recovery of the pomace of its own vineyard. The fellow diners had more than the wine to quench their thirst and inebriate with at his inn.
